Castel del Monte and Matera
The Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II built many castles in his beloved Puglia, but this one is definitely the most famous one.
Driving towards north through the Apulian countryside with its old olive trees and vineyards we will pass the outskirts of Andria and finally reach the hill where Castel del Monte is situated, which is visible from miles away.
Your guide will then walk you inside the eight interconnected chambers of each one of the 2 storeys; from the terraces one can see miles away, easy to understand why it was a great strategic advantage during the Middle Ages, as you could see enemies approaching. After a 2 hour tour of Castel del Monte, we will proceed on the way to Matera to admire Europe culture's Capital 2019.
The city, commonly nicknamed The Rocky City, is just amazing and you will discover the two large rocks where the ancient section sists on. You will also have the opportunity to have a brief walk under the city to admire the architecture. Named "shame of Italy" in the 1907's, is now recognized as the most active cultural center of souther Italy where even a prestigiuos Academy of Arts has its home.After Matera, you will be driven back to Bari.
